We bring you last week's top performances from Malians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Amara Sy
Amara Sy
   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Amara Sy (202-81, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He led his French team Monaco to a victory over the closely-ranked EWE Baskets (3-2) 88-73 in the Basketball Champions League in Wednesday night's game. Sy was MVP of the game. He scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 22 minutes on the court. AS Monaco Basket (5-0) is placed 25th in the Basketball Champions League. So far his team won all five games in the Regular Season. Sy has relatively good stats this year: 11.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.3apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 56.5%(13-23), 3FGP: 66.7% and FT: 92.9% in four games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Sy played for the Mali senior national team six years ago.

Namory Boundy

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Namory Boundy (202-89, currently plays in France). He contributed to a SO Maritime Boulogne's victory against the eighth-ranked ALS Basket (4-4) 88-84 in the French NM1 (third division) last Saturday. Boundy scored 6 points and had 4 steals. SO Maritime Boulogne (3-5) is placed 12th in the NM1. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Boundy's first year with the team. This season he averages: 3.6ppg, 1.8rpg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 26.3%, 3FGP: 44.4%. Boundy is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. He played for the Mali national team in 2015.

Boubacar Sidibe

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94, currently plays in Spain). Sidibe could not help HLA Alicante (5-2) to beat Agustinos-Leclerc (4-3). He scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. HLA Alicante was defeated 77-66 on the road by the lower-ranked Agustinos-Leclerc (#7). But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Sidibe's first year with the team. Sidibe's overall stats this season are: 7.0ppg, 5.6rpg, 2FGP: 57.1%(16-28). He is also a member of the Mali senior national team.

   #4. Swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France) was not able to help Brissac-Aubance (2-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Cisse's very good performance Brissac-Aubance was defeated 85-70 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Saint-Quentin (#4). He was the second best scorer with 21 points. Cisse also added 4 rebounds. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. It's Cisse's first season with the team. This year he has relatively solid stats: 14.9ppg, 2.6rpg and 2.6apg. Cisse has both Mali and French nationalities. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Cisse is currently in the Mali national team roster.

Drissa Ballo

   #5. International center Drissa Ballo (208-95, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for ADA Blois (3-1) in their game against Entente Orleans 45 (3-0) in the French ProB (second division). He recorded 7 points in 18 minutes. ADA Blois lost 65-79 in Orleans to the higher-ranked (#3) Entente 45. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. This year Ballo's overall stats are: 6.5ppg and 3.8rpg in four games. He plays currently for the Mali national team.

   #6. Guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83, currently plays in France) helped Caen edge the 15th-ranked STB Le Havre (1-3) 85-83 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. Chelle recorded 12 points. Caen Basket Calvados (3-1) is placed fourth in the ProB. It was his team's consecutive victory in a row. Chelle has reliable stats this season: 11.3ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.8apg. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Chelle is also a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team six years ago.

   #1. Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in Basketball Champions League). Sy could not help AEK (2-3) to beat Strasbourg IG (3-2). It was not his best game last Tuesday. Sy scored only 2 points in 6 minutes on the court. AEK was edged 80-78 on the road by the higher-ranked (#44) Strasbourg IG. This year Sy's overall stats are: 1.5ppg and 1.5rpg in four games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Nianta Diarra (205-F/C-93, agency: Two Points, currently plays in France) managed to help Sharks Antibes in a victory against the sixth-ranked ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (5-3) 91-73 in the French ProA last Saturday. Diarra scored only 2 points in 14 minutes. Sharks Antibes (3-5) is placed 14th in the ProA. It was his team's first victory after four consecutive loses. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Diarra's overall stats are: 1.8ppg and 2.4rpg in eight games. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French.

   #3. Ibrahima Sidibe (180-PG-95, currently plays in France) contributed to a 2-point Caen's victory against the 15th-ranked STB Le Havre (1-3) 85-83 in the French ProB (second division) on Friday night. He recorded only 2 points in 14 minutes. Caen Basket Calvados (3-1) is placed fourth in the ProB. It was his team's consecutive victory in a row. This year Sidibe's total stats are: 1.0ppg and 1.5apg in four games. Similarly like Diarra and Sy above he has both Mali and French nationalities.

IBRAHIM SAOUNERA CEP Lorient (NM1) agreed terms with 31-year old Mali ex-international point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-80kg-87). He has played for the last three seasons at Vendee Challans Basket. In 25 NM1 games he had 11.1ppg, 2.7rpg, 5.4apg and 1.2spg last season. Saounera won French NM2 Group B championship title in 2011. USFAS and Stade share the top - 9 days ago
USFAS and Stade share the top with 10-3 records. Stade overcame Jeanne D'Arc 81-62 in their latest game played on June 3rd to catch up with USFAS. The latter lost to CRB 56-61. CRB won the first period 12-11 and led 30-18 at the halftime. AS Police is third with a 9-4 record. They lost to AS Sigui 81-85 as the latter improved to a 6-7 record.   [read more]

LUDOVIC CHELLE Saint Vallier Basket Drome (NM1) inked experienced 35-year old naturalized Malian guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83). He has played for the last two years at played at Caen Basket Calvados in the ProB. In 24 games he averaged 8.6ppg, 1.4rpg and 2.0apg last season.
