Cheick Diallo's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Malians playing currently abroad: - Apr 14, 2017

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Mali players, who play currently abroad.


Cheick Diallo

   #1. This week's number one is former U16 international power forward Cheick Diallo (206-96, college: Kansas, currently plays in NBA). He could not help the New Orleans Pelicans (34-48) in their last game. Despite Diallo's very good performance the New Orleans Pelicans (34-48) lost 96-108 on the road to the Los Angeles Lakers. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 11 rebounds. Diallo also added 2 blocks in 27 minutes on the court; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. It was Pelicans' fifth consecutive loss in a row. The Regular Season already ended in the NBA. This year Diallo averages: 5.4ppg, 4.6rpg, 2FGP: 48.0% and FT: 71.4% in 16 games he played so far. He played for the Mali U16 national team six years ago.

Amara Sy

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international forward Amara Sy (202-81, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in France). Sy contributed to Monaco's victory against one of league's weakest teams Entente Orleans 45 (8-19) 78-74 in the French ProA last Tuesday. He scored 7 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. AS Monaco Basket (24-3) is placed first in the ProA. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Sy's overall stats this season are: 7.5ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 54.8%, 3FGP: 17.4% and FT: 72.9%. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Sy played for the Mali national team in 2011.

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94, currently plays in Spain). He contributed to a 2-point Blancos de Rueda's victory against the 13th-ranked L'Hospitalet (9-19) 56-54 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) in Saturday night's game. Sidibe recorded 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Comercial Ulsa Ciudad de Valladolid (15-13) is placed ninth in the LEB Silver. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Sidibe's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 5.5ppg, 5.2rpg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 47.7%, 3FGP: 21.4% and FT: 39.1%. Sidibe played for the Mali national team two years ago.

   #4. Swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France) led Orchesien BC to a victory over the 14th-ranked CFBB (5-20) crushing them 88-68 in the French NM1 (third division) last Saturday. He was MVP of the game. Cisse scored 18 points in 24 minutes. BC Orchies (19-13) is placed fifth in the NM1. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Cisse has relatively good stats this year: 13.2ppg, 3.7rpg and 1.7apg in 32 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. Despite Cisse played previously for the French U20 national team, he is currently in the Mali national team roster.

Former international power forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90, currently plays in France) contributed to a SAP Vaucluse's surprising victory against the second-ranked Quimper UJAP (22-10) 83-78 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game. Soumaoro scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 28 minutes. Sorgues-Avignon-Le Pontet Vaucluse (14-18) is placed 13th in the NM1. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. This year Soumaoro's overall stats are: 8.8ppg and 5.7rpg in 30 games. He used to play for the Mali national team six years ago.

   #6. Power forward Sambou Traore (198-79, currently plays in France) managed to help Chorale de Roanne Basket to win against the sixth-ranked STB Le Havre (12-9) 69-62 in the French ProB (second division) last Friday. Traore scored only 2 points. Chorale de Roanne Basket (11-15) is placed 14th in the ProB. Traore's total stats this season are: 1.8ppg and 1.1rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team two years ago.

Former international point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-87, currently plays in France) helped Vendee Challans win their game against the closely-ranked UB Chartres (16-16) 84-80 in the French NM1 (third division) on Saturday night. Saounera scored 12 points and added 4 passes in 30 minutes. Vendee Challans Basket (17-15) is placed seventh in the NM1. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be extremely important. This year Saounera has relatively solid stats: 12.2ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.7apg and 1.3spg in 32 games. He used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

Point guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83, currently plays in France) helped Caen win their game against the sixth-ranked Rueil (18-14) 86-78 in the French NM1 (third division) in Friday night's game. Chelle scored 6 points. Caen Basket Calvados (25-7) is placed first in the NM1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. Chelle's total stats this season are: 8.4ppg, 2.2rpg and 2.1apg. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Chelle is currently in the Mali national team roster.

   #1. Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in France) could not help ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (13-14) in their last game. Despite his good performance ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket lost 88-92 on the road to the leading Monaco. Sy scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 22 minutes. It's Sy's first season with the team. This year his overall stats are: 7.0ppg and 3.3rpg in 25 games he played so far. Sy has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Nianta Diarra (205-F/C-93, currently plays in France) was not able to help Olympique Antibes in their game against Pau-Lacq-Orthez (19-8) in the French ProA. Diarra scored 6 points. Olympique Antibes was edged 93-92 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Pau-Lacq-Orthez (#3). Diarra's overall stats this season are: 3.0ppg and 3.0rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French.

ADA Blois Basket 41 (ProB) signed 22-year old Mali international center Drissa Ballo (208-95). He will still stay in France where he played last season at Maurienne in the ProB. In 30 ProB games he had 5.0ppg and 4.1rpg. He helped them to make it to the French ProB Leaders Cup Semifinals. Ballo won French ProB championship title in 2016. Saint-Quentin Basket-Ball (ProB) inked 27-year old Mali power forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90). He has played for the last two years at SAP Vaucluse in the NM1. In 32 games he recorded 8.9ppg and 5.6rpg last season. The previous (15-16) season Soumaoro was tested by ADA Blois (also in NM1). He was also a member of Mali international program for some years.
