Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Malians who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Amara Sy (202-81, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in France). He could not help Monaco (19-3) to beat JSF Nanterre (16-6). Sy recorded 8 points in 19 minutes on the court. The league leader Monaco lost 88-99 on the road to the lower-ranked (#3) JSF Nanterre. It was Monaco's first loss after ten consecutive victories. This year Sy averages: 7.7ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.4apg, 2FGP: 57.3%(63-110), 3FGP: 15.8% and FT: 72.3% in 22 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Sy played for the Mali senior national team six years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France). Cisse was not able to help Orchesien BC (15-13) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Orchesien BC was defeated 90-86 in Saint Vallier by the lower-ranked Saint Vallier (#11). Cisse recorded 15 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. It's Cisse's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.9ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 52.7%, 3FGP: 41.0% and FT: 77.5%. Cisse is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Cisse played also for the Mali national team in 2015.

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was former international center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94, currently plays in Spain). He was not able to secure a victory for Blancos de Rueda (13-11) in their game against Zornotza (13-11) in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division). Sidibe scored 5 points in 18 minutes. Blancos de Rueda was crushed 77-55 in Amorebieta-Echano by the higher-ranked (#7) Zornotza. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. This year Sidibe's overall stats are: 5.6ppg, 5.2rpg, 1.3bpg, 2FGP: 47.5%, 3FGP: 23.1% and FT: 39.1% in 20 games. He played for the Mali national team two years ago.

   #4. Forward Sagaba Konate (203-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to W.Virginia's victory against the The University of Texas (15-3) 63-53 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Konate scored 6 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks. The West Virginia University has a solid 12-7 conference record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Konate's total stats this year are: 4.1ppg, 2.9rpg and 1.5bpg. He used to play for the Mali U18 national team back in 2014.

Former international power forward Sambou Traore (198-79, currently plays in France) couldn't help Chorale de Roanne (9-13) in their game against Nantes (11-11) in the French ProB (second division). Traore cannot count it as his best performance. He recorded only 2 points in 7 minutes on the court. Chorale de Roanne lost 73-77 on the opponent's court to the higher-ranked (#9) Nantes. It was Chorale de Roanne's fourth consecutive loss in a row. This year Traore's total stats are: 1.8ppg and 1.5rpg in six games. He has both Mali and French nationalities. Traore used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

   #6. Center Drissa Ballo (208-95, currently plays in France) couldn't help Aix-Maurienne (9-13) in their game against Poitiers (11-11) in the French ProB (second division). He recorded only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Aix-Maurienne was edged 85-82 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Poitiers (#7). Ballo has averaged so far 5.5ppg and 4.3rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team two years ago.

Former international power forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Lorient (11-17) 77-62 in the French NM1 (third division) on Saturday night. Soumaoro recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in 17 minutes. Sorgues-Avignon-Le Pontet Vaucluse (12-16) is placed 13th in the NM1. Soumaoro has averaged so far 9.1ppg and 6.2rpg in 26 games. He used to play for the Mali national team six years ago.

Point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-87, currently plays in France) led Vendee Challans to a victory against one of league's weakest teams Angers BC (11-17) 90-81 in the French NM1 (third division) in Saturday night's game. Saounera recorded 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Vendee Challans Basket (14-14) is placed ninth in the NM1. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Saounera has relatively solid stats: 11.8ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.5apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Mali national team back in 2015.

Former international point guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83, currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Gries/Oberhoffen (13-15) crushing them 95-68 in the French NM1 (third division) last Saturday. Chelle recorded 10 points and added 4 passes in 25 minutes. Caen Basket Calvados (22-6) is placed first in the NM1. It was his team's 13th consecutive victory in a row. Chelle has averaged so far 8.9ppg, 2.3rpg and 2.2apg in 27 games. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Chelle is currently in the Mali national team roster.

   #1. Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in France). He could not help ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (11-11) to beat Chalon/Saor (16-6). Sy recorded 7 points. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket was defeated 77-68 on the road by the second-ranked Chalon/Saor. It's Sy's first season with the team. His overall stats this year are: 7.1ppg and 3.6rpg. Sy has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Nianta Diarra (205-F/C-93, currently plays in France) was not able to help Olympique Antibes in their game against Limoges CSP Elite (11-11) in the French ProA. He recorded 8 points in 19 minutes. Olympique Antibes was crushed 95-66 in Limoges by the much higher-ranked (#9) CSP Elite. It's Diarra's first season with the team. This year Diarra's overall stats are: 2.8ppg and 3.0rpg in 22 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French.

   #3. Kassoum Yakwe (201-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the St.John's (7-11) in their game against the Villanova University (16-3) in the NCAA. He scored only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The St.John's was crushed 108-67 at home by the University. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Yakwe has averaged so far 4.2ppg, 3.2rpg and 1.9bpg.

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Mali players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is former U16 international power forward Cheick Diallo (206-96). He could not help the New Orleans Pelicans (34-48) in their last game. Despite Diallo's very good performance the New Orleans Pelicans (34-48) lost 96-108 on the road to the Los Angeles Lakers.    [read more]

Senegal edges Mali in overtime, both advance to FIBA AfroBasket - 1 month ago
Senegal overcame Mali 79-72 in overtime, as both teams advanced to FIBA AfroBasket. Senegal grabbed a 17-16 lead at the end of the first period and added a 19-15 rally in the second frame. Mali scored 17 points in the third as well as the last stanzas to tie the game after four periods. In overtime Senegal needed a 14-7 surge to win the game.
