Amara Sy selected the top Malian playing abroad in last week's games - Mar 10, 2017

Amara Sy

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Amara Sy (202-81, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in Basketball Champions League). He led his French team Monaco to a victory against the closely-ranked AEK Athens (9-5) 95-87 in the Basketball Champions League in Wednesday night's game. Sy scored 12 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists in a mere 19 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group A. AS Monaco Basket (12-2) is placed first. This year Sy averages: 7.2ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.8apg, 2FGP: 40.3%, 3FGP: 45.5% and FT: 75.0% in 15 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French. Sy played for the Mali senior national team six years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Sourata Cisse (196-86, currently plays in France). Cisse could not help Orchesien BC (15-12) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Orchesien BC was defeated 90-82 on the road by the lower-ranked UB Chartres (#9). Cisse scored 10 points. It's Cisse's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.8ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 52.4%, 3FGP: 40.2% and FT: 76.9%. Cisse is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French. Despite he played previously for the French U20 national team, Cisse played also for the Mali national team in 2015.

   #3. The Mali player who performed third best last week abroad was former U18 international forward Sagaba Konate (203-97, currently plays college basketball in the States). He contributed to W.Virginia's surprising victory against the The University of Texas (15-3) 63-53 in the NCAA last Thursday. Konate scored 6 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks in only 13 minutes. The West Virginia University has a solid 8-5 conference record this season. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This year Konate's overall stats are: 4.5ppg, 2.9rpg, 1.4bpg, 2FGP: 57.1%(56-98) and FT: 64.3% in 31 games. He played for the Mali U18 national team three years ago.

   #4. Forward Mohamed Bah (206, currently studies in the States) was not able to help the Drexel in their game against the James Madison University (7-11) in the NCAA. Bah scored 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. The Drexel was defeated 80-70 at home by the James Madison University. It was Drexel's third consecutive loss in a row. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Bah has been at the team for four years. His total stats this season are: 4.3ppg and 3.7rpg. Bah used to play for the Mali national team back in 2015.

Former international power forward Cheick Soumaoro (204-90, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams SAP Vaucluse (11-16) in their game against Union Rennes (11-16) in the French NM1 (third division), despite his good performance in Saturday night's game. He scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in 23 minutes. But SAP Vaucluse lost 74-87 on their home court in Sorgues to the higher-ranked (#13) Union_Rennes. It was SAP Vaucluse's third consecutive loss in a row. This year Soumaoro's total stats are: 9.2ppg and 6.2rpg in 25 games. He used to play for the Mali national team six years ago.

   #6. Center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Comercial Ulsa Ciudad de Valladolid in a victory against the 13th-ranked CB Tarragona 2017 (7-16) 81-63 in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division) on Friday night. He scored only 2 points in 15 minutes. Comercial Ulsa Ciudad de Valladolid (13-10) is placed sixth in the LEB Silver. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Sidibe has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.4bpg in 19 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Mali senior team two years ago.

Former international power forward Sambou Traore (198-79, currently plays in France) couldn't help Chorale de Roanne (9-12) in their game against Charleville-Mezieres (12-9) in the French ProB (second division). Traore cannot count Tuesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points. Chorale de Roanne was crushed 96-70 on the opponent's court by the much higher-ranked Charleville-Mezieres (#3). It was Chorale de Roanne's third consecutive loss in a row. Traore has averaged so far 1.8ppg and 1.4rpg. He used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

Center Drissa Ballo (208-95, currently plays in France) contributed to Aix-Maurienne's victory against one of league's weakest teams Saint-Quentin (8-13) 69-61 in the French ProB (second division) last Tuesday. Ballo scored only 4 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 16 minutes. Aix-Maurienne Savoie Basket (9-12) is placed 15th in the ProB. Ballo has averaged so far 5.6ppg and 4.2rpg in 21 games. He used to play for the Mali national team back in 2015.

Former international point guard Ibrahim Saounera (179-87, currently plays in France) led Vendee Challans to a victory over the 16th-ranked Vitre (11-16) 85-74 in the French NM1 (third division) on Tuesday night. Saounera was MVP of the game. He scored 15 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 4 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line). Vendee Challans Basket (13-14) is placed tenth in the NM1. This season Saounera has relatively solid stats: 11.7ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.6apg and 1.4spg. He used to play for the Mali national team two years ago.

Point guard Ludovic Chelle (183-83, currently plays in France) contributed to Caen's victory against the 15th-ranked Lorient (11-16) 97-92 in the French NM1 (third division) in Friday night's game. Chelle scored only 3 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Caen Basket Calvados (21-6) is placed first in the NM1. It was his team's 12th consecutive victory in a row. Chelle has averaged so far 8.9ppg, 2.4rpg and 2.1apg. He is a former international player as six years ago he still played for the Mali senior national team.

   #1. Bandja Sy (204-F-90, agency: BeoBasket, college: N.Mexico St., currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Paris-Levallois (12-9) 86-70 in the French ProA last Saturday. He scored 8 points. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (11-10) is placed seventh in the ProA. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. Sy's overall stats this season are: 7.1ppg and 3.6rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Mali and French.

   #2. Nianta Diarra (205-F/C-93, currently plays in France). Diarra could not help Olympique Antibes (7-14) to beat Cholet Basket (8-13). He scored only 4 points and blocked 2 blocks in 17 minutes. Olympique Antibes was badly defeated 73-57 on the road by the higher-ranked (#14) Cholet Basket. This year Diarra's overall stats are: 2.5ppg and 3.0rpg in 21 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Mali and French.

   #3. Cheickna Dembele (211-F-96, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to help the UNLV in their game against the San Diego State University (3-10) in the NCAA. Dembele cannot count Wednesday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 5 blocks. The UNLV were defeated 62-52 at home by the State University. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Dembele has averaged so far 4.0ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.3bpg.

   #4. Bakary Konate (211-C-93, currently studies in the States) managed to help University of Minnesota in a victory against the University of Nebraska (3-13) 88-73 in the NCAA in Thursday night's game. Konate scored only 2 points in 10 minutes. The University of Minnesota has 6-6 conference record this season. His team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Konate has averaged so far 1.8ppg and 3.0rpg in 30 games.

   #5. Ousmane Ba (211-F-92, currently plays in NCAA2) contributed to a 3-point Saint Mary's (TX) University's victory against the Texas A&M International University (13-5) 63-60 in the NCAA2 last Thursday. He scored only 3 points. The Saint Mary's (TX) University has 8-10 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the NCAA2 Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. Ba has averaged so far 1.4ppg and 1.7rpg.

   #6. Ibrahima Sidibe (180-PG-95, currently plays in France) was not able to secure a victory for GET Vosges (16-11) in their last game. Despite his good performance GET Vosges lost 76-84 in Angers to the one of league's weakest teams (#17) Angers BC. Sidibe scored 11 points and added 4 passes in 21 minutes. Sidibe has averaged so far 8.6ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.8apg in 23 games. He has both Mali and French nationalities. Despite Sidibe's Mali passport, he previously played for the French U20 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Mali team.

   #7. Kassoum Yakwe (201-F, is currently at the American university) couldn't help the St.John's in their game against the Villanova University in the NCAA. Yakwe scored only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. His team was crushed by 41 points 108-67. Yakwe has averaged so far 4.2ppg, 3.2rpg and 2.0bpg in 32 games.

HLA Lucentum Alicante (LEB Silver) landed 23-year old Mali international center Boubacar Sidibe (205-94) from Comercial Ulsa Ciudad de Valladolid. In 38 LEB Silver games in Spain he averaged 6.5ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.4bpg last season. He helped them to win the LEB Silver Play-Off title.
