The Tubman High School basketball gym in Monrovia yesterday was the scene of exciting basketball actions that saw APM Terminators whipping their Chinese opponents from Chinese Harbor, 44-27 points in basketball. Before that result, Tubman High School Alumni Association had defeated Lango Area School System (LASS) Alumni Association 29-20 points. Though the matches featured players who were formerly active, there were nonetheless flashes of their past capabilities. The competition, according to Charles Dortu, was a fundraiser organized by LASS to raise funds to support their alma mater in Yekeya, Nimba County. Dortu is Recreation and Mobilization Coordinator at Lango Area School System (LASS) of Yekepa, Nimba County. "We want to assist our alma mater and therefore we put this tournament to together," he said. Carol High School's alma mater also took part in the competition. Though Mr. Dortu did not announce how much was realized from the tournament, no amount was charged for spectators. However, much food and drinks were sold which served as the means to raise funds - and maybe contributions from participating teams, including APM Terminators and the Chinese Harbor team, also went in as funds raised. The Chinese team is presently doing rehabilitation work at the Freeport of Monrovia, according a member of the APM team at the gym yesterday. The one-day tournament drew a large crowd from several communities, who just wanted to celebrate the National Flag Day, despite the intermittent rains. "It is traditional for the rains to fall on August 24," said APM Terminals' Jonathan Armah Baxter, who was at the game with Ms. Regina Weah to support his side to victory. On the games themselves, the players exhibited a lot of understanding as each session saw a see-saw battle as players either missed or made baskets to the delight of the fans, who were in their numbers. "Every one of the players played with a common language," said a young woman who said she was excited and enjoyed the games, "everyone played to his best." Although the teams were of males this time around, the organizers said in the future editions women's basketball teams would also participate.
