Derrick
Byars
Jean D'Arc Vichy Clermont Metropole (ProB) inked 32-year old American (has also Ivorian passport) swingman Derrick Byars (201-100kg-84, college: Vanderbilt, agency: Inception Sports). He played in the summer at Aguada in Puerto Rican BSN league, but left the team in March. In 6 games he averaged impressive 15.3ppg, 7.3rpg and 2.5apg.
In 2007 Byars was drafted by Portland Trail Blazers (NBA) in second round (42nd overall). He attended Vanderbilt University and it will be his tenth season in pro basketball.
Among other achievements Byars' team was regular season runner-up in Belgian League in 2014. He received also Gatorade All-D-League Honorable Mention award back in 2011.
Byars is a very experienced player. He has quite traveled the world as his pro career brought him to twelve different countries on three different continents (Europe, Latin America and of course North America). Byars has played previously professionally in Germany, Greece, Israel (Maccabi Rishon), Spain (Sevilla), Venezuela (Guaiqueries), NBA (Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies), France (Cholet Basket), Belgium (Belfius Mons-Hainaut), Argentina (Libertad Sunchales), D-League (Bakersfield Jam) and Russia (Krasny Oktyabr).
His game is described as: (by Matthew Maurer for NBADraft.net in 2007)
Complete player with good lateral quickness and athleticism. Defensively Byars does a great job staying in front of his man. Fundamentally there are few guards in the draft that have his array of tools. Plays the game with a good level of moxie and toughness. Excellent ball handler who has played point guard several times during his collegiate career
Shot selection at times can be questionable. Would benefit his game if he utilized the mid-range shot more
.
