The absence of a world class gymnasium has hampered Ghana's prospects of hosting international basketball tournaments for several years. However, the construction of a modern gymnasium at the Sports Emporium in the nation's capital Accra could see the West African country host Africa's flagship tournament- FIBA AfroBasket- for the first time. The court which seats little over a thousand people however, is yet to be completed as the playing surface is yet to be fixed likewise rims and ventilation amenities. With the biannual competition set to take place this year in Congo Brazzaville and the 2019 host yet to be determined, completing the edifice could put Ghana in the mix as potential host. This year's competition takes place between August 17 and August 31. After successfully hosting the 2015 All Africa Games, the Kintele Sports Complex in Brazzaville will host the continent's top ranked teams. The 2019 edition will also serve as qualification to the World Cup. Nigeria beat Angola 74-65 to win the 2015 Championship.
