Basketball level one course impresses coaches - May 16, 2013

The coaches currently attending the Basketball Level one coaches course at the Bamboo Hotel in Kololi are very happy for having benefited from a high level coach for the country.

The coaches currently attending the Basketball Level one coaches course at the Bamboo Hotel in Kololi are very happy for having benefited from a high level coach for the country.
The course, which will end on May 19, is organised by the Gambia Basketball Federation in collaboration with The Gambia National Olympic Committee as well as the Olympic Solidarity.
Lamin Fadera, a participant from the Prisons police, said the course helped him a lot as before this time he did not know anything about basketball but he has gained a lot through the course.
According to Federa, after the training he would advise his fellow security officers to follow basketball.
Sports coordinator NBR, Alhagie Darboe, said he did not know anything about basketball but he is now conversant with the rules of the game especially.
Darboe said he would share the knowledge gained in his region.
Amadou Jawo, Sports Coordinator of URR, said basketball is an interesting game, which unfortunately many people in The Gambia have not taken interest in.
Wallidan Basketball coach Ousman Conateh said he has been coaching Wallidan team for the past five years, adding that he has done some courses but the course he is attending is the best. Conteh also promised to share the knowledge gained from the training.
Lamin Marena, a staff of Bamboo Hotel, expressed his delight for the hiring of the hotel by the basketball federation to run their course. He described the participants as friendly.
Course Director Professor Ronald Onyango Owino said the training is going on smoothly, adding that the coaches are working effectively.
The course covers the fundamentals of the basketball, how to dribble and how to pass rebounce.
According to the course director, this was his first time to come to The Gambia. Gambians are kind to me, especially the coaches, he said.

The GAF women basketball team last Saturday defeated Saint's by 9-8 points at their All-Star Basketball Competition held at the Basketball Court at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The second game was followed by the male category where Yellow team defeated Green team by 60-57 points.

The GAF women basketball team last Saturday defeated Saint's by 9-8 points at their All-Star Basketball Competition held at the Basketball Court at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. The second game was followed by the male category where Yellow team defeated Green team by 60-57 points. The game of the night went to the wire with players showing their slam dunk and the three-point shooting skills. In the first female competition, Fanta Sallah emerged as the most valuable and outstanding performer throughout the clash and got awarded a trophy at the end of the competition. Baboucarr Ceesay also got awarded a trophy as the most valuable player at the clash. In the old hands team, Mama Jeng, Binneh Marong, Yassin Joof Jow, Awa Foon, Mbaheh Camara and others took on the younger players for a ten-minute game. Old hands defeated the young players in that encounter. At the end of the first game, numerous trophies and certificates were presented to various dignitaries, which included the GNOC, for their financial and morale support during the year. Certificate was also given to the US Ambassador to The Gambia for their support to basketball such as sponsoring the previous 3X3 basketball tournament which saw players from different ages display their talents. Basketballs were also distributed to the male and female clubs. Each received 5 balls including Old Hands female basketball team who received 2 balls. Thirty balls were given for primary school sport and 30 for secondary school sport. Seven regional sports coordinators received 5 balls, Combined Services Sports Association 3, Basketball Academy 4 and the University of The Gambia 5. Trust Bank Gambia Limited received also a certificate of appreciation for sponsoring basketball, which took into consideration their donation of $1,000 for airlifting 300 basketballs from the FIBA Africa office in Ivory Coast to Banjul. School of Information and Communication Technology Saturday beat Business and Public Administration 18 - 17 points in the University Of The Gambia and Students Union Inter-School Basketball Finals.
The game, hosted at the YMCA Basketball Lawn, is first of its kind in the development of sport at the University of The Gambia (UTG).
It was also set to take another dimension in the development of basketball at the UTG.
