Central African Republic earned victory at the start of the classification round at the African Championship. They defeated Republic of Congo behind 22 points from Max Kouguere (198-SF-87). Republic of Congo ensured a 16:10 lead after ten minutes of action. Central African Republic narrowed the gap in the second frame. They got within 2 points at the interval 28:26. Central African Republic pulled ahead in the third term. They surged ahead to eke out a 47:45 lead at the final intermission. Republic of Congo erased the deficit and pulled ahead for a 63:62 lead with under two minutes remaining in regulation. But Max Kouguere sank two free throws in the final 90 seconds of the game to seal the victory for Central African Republic. Anthony Gouzhy (180-G-93) netted 19 points, while William Kossangue-Toro (198-F/G-86, college: Campbell) and Johan Grebongo (204-C-94) added 7 points each for the winners. Medhie Mouesse (93) responded with 16 points for Republic of Congo. Rodel Ongoundou (93) had 12 points in the loss.
