Cape Verde will play for the fifth place at the 2013 AfroBasket. They overcame Nigeria in the classification round today. Mario Correia (189-G-78, college: Bryant) stepped up with 16 points to pace the winners.
Nigeria unloaded 23 points in the opening quarter and gained a 2-point lead. The Tigers maintained the lead throughout the second quarter. Nigeria established a 40:37 halftime lead. But Cape Verde narrowed the gap in the third term. They got within one point at the final break 54:55. Cape Verde surged ahead in the fourth stanza. Nigeria tried to return into the contest late in regulation but came up short at the end. Brian Rudolph (180-PG-88) netted 15 points and issued 8 assists, while Flavio Gomes (194-G/F-88) added 12 points for the winners. Ike Diogu (204-F/C-83, college: Arizona St.) tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds for Nigeria. Al-Farouq Aminu (206-F-90, college: Wake Forest) had 13 points in the loss.

Cape Verde and Chad get second chance - 11 days ago
West African sides Chad and Cape Verde will have another shot at competing in the upcoming Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) and 2019 World Cup qualifiers after both teams got selected to compete in a special tournament. In 50 D-League games he averaged 10.5ppg, 7.9rpg, 1.5apg and 2.8bpg this season. A very good year in his career as he was selected to D-League All-Star Game. Cholet Basket (ProA) agreed terms with 27-year old Portuguese-Cape Verdean small forward Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill). He will still stay in France where he played last season at Chorale de Roanne Basket in the ProB. In 34 games he had 14.8ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.6apg, 1.9spg (in top 4) and 1.1bpg.
