2013 AfroBasket: Cape Verde roll past Central African Republic - Aug 22, 2013

Cape Verde celebrated the opening win at the 2013 AfroBasket. They knocked down Central African Republic for 1-1 record in Group C. Rodrigo Mascarenhas (197-F-80) posted 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the winners. Central African Republic fell at 0-2 record after the loss.
Cape Verde ensured a strong start to the game. They opened a 23:9 lead late in the opening frame. Central African Republic managed to narrow the deficit in the second quarter however they still trailed by 7 points at halftime 38:45. Cape Verde quickly cleared off to double digits in the third term. They stayed in charge though Michael Mokongo (180-PG-86) put Central African Republic within 9 points at the final break 55:64. Siris and Max Kouguere (198-SF-87) dragged Central African Republic within six points midway through the fourth term but they could not any closer in the reminder of the contest as Cape Verde got away with the victory. Dimitry Akanda-Coronel (193-G-92) netted 17 points, while Aldevino Lima (208-F-86) added 15 points in the win. Michael Mokongo answered with 14 points for Central African Republic. Max Kouguere had 13 points and 8 rebounds in the defeat.

West African sides Chad and Cape Verde will have another shot at competing in the upcoming Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) and 2019 World Cup qualifiers after both teams got selected to compete in a special tournament. Cholet Basket (ProA) agreed terms with 27-year old Portuguese-Cape Verdean small forward Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill). He will still stay in France where he played last season at Chorale de Roanne Basket in the ProB. In 34 games he had 14.8ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.6apg, 1.9spg (in top 4) and 1.1bpg.
