Group B
Senegal - Morocco 76-71
Senegal recorded the first victory in Tunisia. They held off Morocco in a tough battle in Group B. Gorgui Dieng (211-C-90, college: Louisville, agency: Wasserman Media) stepped up with 24 points and 15 boards for the winners. Senegal used a 24:17 run in the third term to take a 7-point lead. Morocco narrowed the gap late in regulation but Senegal hung on to avoid the defeat. Antoine Mendy (199-F-83, agency: GAgency) and Mamadou Ndoye (190-PG-79, agency: Triton Sports) finished with 17 points each for the winners. Abdelhakim Zouita (200-F-86) responded with 27 points and 4 rebounds for Morocco.

Angola - Mozambique 84-72
Angola earned the opening victory in Group B. They held off Mozambique for 1-0 record in the standings. Carlos Morais (200-G-85, agency: SIG) scored 18 points for the winners. Mozambique recorded a 43:32 halftime lead. But Angola unloaded 29 points in the third term to spur ahead. Angola dropped 23 points in the fourth frame and iced the victory. Braulio Morais (190-G-90) had 11 points for the winners. Augusto Matos (186-PG-90, agency: Slan Sports) responded with 25 points for Mozambique. Helton Ubisse (196-C-95) netted 10 points in the loss.

Group D
Algeria - Zimbabwe 87-67
Algeria cruised past Zimbabwe for the opening victory in Tunisia. Mohamed Harath (198-F-90) scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to pace Algeria. Zimbabwe posted a 20:15 lead after ten minutes. Algeria pulled ahead in the second term for a 39:37 halftime lead. Algeria stretched the gap at 12-point mark heading into the fourth quarter. They dropped 21 points in the fourth term and sealed the victory. Samir Mekdad (188-PG-86, agency: Bemavocorp) had 17 points for the winners. Vitalis Chikoko (207-F/C-91, agency: LUMANI 10.7) and Tatenda Maturure (G/F-90) responded with 14 points each for Zimbabwe.

Ivory Coast - Cape Verde 56-76
Cape Verde got to a perfect start to their AfroBasket campaign. They knocked Ivory Coast in Group D. Jeffrey Xavier (189-PG-85, college: Providence, agency: You First) scored 19 points to lead the winning side. Cape Verde recorded a 47:22 halftime lead. Ivory Coast narrowed the gap in the second half but could not avoid the defeat. Dimitry Akanda-Coronel (197-SG-92) provided 15 points in the victory. Mouloukou Souleyman Diabate (181-PG-87, agency: Beo Basket) responded with 12 points and 8 rebounds for the losing side.  



Four teams to contest for AfroBasket final slot - 1 month ago
Cape Verde, Chad, Central African Republic and Zimbabwe will compete for the final spot at the upcoming Africa Basketball Championship (AfroBasket). Angola refuses to host Afrobasket 2017 - 2 months ago
Angola will not host the African Men's Basketball Championship (Afrobasket2017), said the secretary general of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), Nelson Sardinha. Speaking to ANGOP, he said that Fiba Africa proposed to Angola to hold the continental competition during the congress held this month in Bamako, Mali, but it was rejected by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, alleging that in August, attentions will be focused on the election period   [read more]
Angola selected as new host country for FIBA AfroBasket 2017 - 2 months ago
Angola will replace the Republic of Congo as the host country of FIBA AfroBasket 2017, FIBA Africa announced on Friday. The decision comes following the withdrawal of the Republic of Congo, who pointed to logistics issues as the reason for their inability to host Africa's flagship basketball competition.
