The sixteen countries that will take part in the 27th edition of the African Cup of Nations Afrobasket billed for Abidjan, Cote dIvoire from August 20 through 31 this have equal chances of lifting the title as FIBA Africa has introduce new format that makes it tougher for the title to be won.
The new format which will see all sixteen team squaring up against each other after the preliminary round unlike the previous editions where only eight teams will make it to the quarter finals, the 27th edition will see all sixteen countries having opportunity in the final-eight round or second round where group-A leader will battle it out with fourth placed team in group-B.
The new format is fashion after the FIBA World Championship but unlike the world championship which has twenty four countries the Africa showpiece is made up of sixteen and only time will tell before the continental ruling body open up the championship to twenty four as the game is gaining more awareness and popularity on the continent, which is as a result of the good work the men and women at the FIBA Africa secretariat in Abidjan and Cairo under the leadership of the Secretary General Alphonse Bile are doing daily to ensure that basketball remain a top sport in Africa.
The eight winners in the second round (round of eight finals) will then book a place in the quarter finals with the three top teams finisher on August 31 will fly the continent flag at the new look FIBA World Cup slated for Madrid Spain in 2014.

Africa basketball ruling body FIBA Africa on March 30 this year roll out the grouping for the 27th Africa Cup of Nations (Afrobasket) slated for August 20 31 in Abidjan Cote dIvoire.
The sixteen qualified countries were grouped into four pool of four countries each with the host Cote dIvoire seeded in group-A, defending champion Tunisia, runner-up Angola and third place side at the 26th edition of the continent most glamorous basketball championship Nigeria were seeded in group B, C and D.
Other countries to battle two-time champion and host Cote dIvoire in group-A are five-time winner Egypt, Senegal and host of the 2005 edition Algeria.
Tunisia will contend with Rwanda, Burkina Faso and Morocco in group-B while ten-time champion and Africa most seeded team Angola will do battle against Central Africa Republic, Mozambique and Cape Verde.
Nigeria who is looking to win the Nations Cup for the first time after several attempts will slug it against 2007 finalist Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville and Mali in group-D.
Each country will play games at the preliminary rounds with two teams qualifying for the knock-out stage enroute the grand finale.
The questions on the lips of basketball faithful across Africa is that what next after the grouping, will Tunisia successfully defend it title it won two years ago in Madagascar beating Angola in the final or will another champion emerged?

According to the draw on Saturday, held in Abidjan, the Angolans will play on August 22 against Mozambicans and close the first round games facing Central Africans on August 24.
